Wow! 2020 seems like a year for the record books, doesn’t it?  All our plans for the New Year crushed quickly. Now that we’re halfway through with the year, you (like me!) were thinking that the worst was behind us… then Bam! More trouble hit!  I’m almost afraid to ask what further evil lurks in the shadows of the coming months, especially with a vitriolic presidential election coming up!

I’m not going to delve into details of what’s going on because you already know; you’re living it and it’s already near impossible to escape from on social media.  Though some may disagree, I don’t feel like this blog is the place for such commentary. I am not equipped, nor inclined to try to solve these age-long issues in a single blog post.  Despite all that, we can still look to Biblical principles that apply to any and every troublesome situation we’re up against.

It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed listening to all the violence, destruction and dissension among us. What can we do, other than take a deep breath and know that this too, shall pass?

The lyrics to Jeremy Camp’s song “Same Power” have been speaking to me of late, so I thought I would share them with you here.

“I can see waters raging at my feet, I can feel the breath of those surrounding me. I can hear the sound of nations rising up. We will not be overtaken. We will not be overcome.  I can walk down this dark and painful road, I can face every fear of the unknown. I can hear all God’s children singing out. We will not be overtaken, we will not be overcome. 

The same power that rose Jesus from the grave, the same power that commands the dead to wake lives in us, lives in us.  The same power that moves mountains when He speaks, the same power that can calm a raging sea lives in us, lives in us.  We have hope that His promises are true, in His strength, there is nothing we can’t do. Yes, we know there are greater things in store. We will not be overtaken. We will not be overcome….” 

As followers of Christ, we have the assurance that no matter how much hate, and no matter how much turmoil the enemy stirs up in our midst, God is still, and always will be in control.  This does not surprise Him.  Coronavirus did not surprise Him.  Whatever it is you are personally dealing with does not surprise Him.

The best part of that knowledge is that His shoulders are broad enough to handle all of our troubles, worries, anxieties, hurts, and doubts. If what’s going on makes you angry, yell to Him!  Are you fearful, or depressed? He is waiting to comfort you with open arms. If you are weary of it all, He understands.  We can trust God to carry those burdens for us every moment of our lives, no matter what the situation is that we’re facing.

Matthew 28:11 says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”   All we have to do it ask Him. We will not be overtaken. We will not be overcome.
