Happy Birthday Ottergirl!

Making “rememberies” is a priority in our family. It’s always been important to us that even though we may not be able to take amazing resort vacations or whatever-whatever it is to keep up with the Joneses, we do make some GREAT memories with our kids. One of the easier ways I like to do this is with birthday parties. I know some families think that they are silly to do, but I like to celebrate the day each kiddo was born. A day just for them to let them know how valued they are as a person. 🙂

So I thought I’d do a little Mama-bragging today! As you know, my Ottergirl just turned 9 this week. Earlier this year she had the idea that she’d like a puppy-themed birthday party, but instead of getting gifts, she wanted to collect items that our local animal shelter might be in need of.

Today, we finalized the collection and turned it all in! It was so much fun, and I know she’ll remember this birthday for years to come, more than she would have a regular birthday party with normal gifts. The shelter volunteers were very appreciative, and she may even be getting her picture in the local paper. I know she didn’t expect that when she first came up with her idea! A couple of people gave cash, and it was so much fun for her to go shopping by herself for puppy supplies with the money. Here’s a list of all the cool stuff we collected:

1 Adoption, 80 lbs of Kibbles, 4 cans of soft food, 5 boxes/packages of biscuits/treats, 1 food dispenser, 1 water dispenser, 1 bottle of dog shampoo, 4 collars, 2 leashes, 2 harnesses, 17 dog toys and 6 food bowls

The Adoption was by my parents!  They found a sweet little dog named Lilly there at the shelter to invite into their home after being dogless for the past five years. Ottergirl and the other kidlets are so excited that they’ll get to see Lilly all the time now at Grandma & Grandpa’s house. 🙂

What a memorable birthday Ottergirl’s 9th has been!

Do you have any memory-making traditions at your house? Does your family do birthday parties? If so, how do you celebrate?  I’d love to hear your ideas!
