Snow Days: Enjoying the Beauty of Winter

SNOWBALL
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first – it wet the bed.

SNOW!

A week ago, we got a good six inches of the white stuff. Today, the forecast is calling for another eight inches on top of the snow that’s left. To someone who didn’t grow up with snow every winter, (I think we had snow 2 or 3 times in the 16 years I lived in southern California!) snow is an exciting event!  It’s been a few years since we’ve had a snowy winter like this one here in Missouri!

What are some of your favorite snow-day activities?  We have a nice sledding hill behind our house that our neighbor generously allows the kidlets to use. Also, good old-fashioned snowball fights are always fun!

SNOW JEWELS

One year, we made snow jewels.  If this winter keeps up, we may have to do it again; they are so much fun!  You’ll need some water balloons left over from last summer, fill them up with water, a few drops of food coloring, and leave them outside in the snow overnight to freeze.  The next day, (make sure they are frozen solid first, or you’ll be left with a colorful mess) break the balloons, take the rubber off and discard.  You’ll be left with beautiful, colorful snow jewels!   They are gorgeous when the sun peeks out at them!

SNOWMEN

Last week’s snow here was too powdery for a full-sized snowman, but we tried.  Here’s a pic of Mr. Peppermint.  He was a happy little guy until the snow began to suck the red dye from his candy nose, which eventually turned his whole face pink! Then the squirrels noticed this odd looking fellow and discovered he held a yummy treat!  Thus was the short life and death of Mr. Peppermint.

Another year when RocketBoy was little, we had a snowman named Leafy.  As you probably guessed, we had had only a bit of snow that time, and rolling it led to lots of leaves getting stuck all over him.  Still, lots of “rememberies” were made!!

SNOW CREAM

Probably our favorite snow tradition is making snow cream.  There are recipes for it all over the internet, but the variation we enjoy best is posted below.  We hope you enjoy!

What are some of your favorite winter activities and traditions?  We’d love to hear about new ones!   I don’t have the advantage of having a snow-filled childhood to look back on for ideas, so let me know some of your favorites down in the comments!   Blessings to you and yours!

  • 1 Tbl vanilla extract
